Why Grass-Finished Beef?

Hey there!
Just a quick word about delicious, grass-finished beef.
It’s true that all cattle are grass-fed, but not all are also grass-finished. You may wonder what the difference is and if it even matters, and honestly, to some it doesn’t. But, as a rancher, it’s extremely important to us for several reasons.
First, grass-finishing is more natural and suited to cattle’s biological design. Our cattle graze on open pastures, consuming a diet of grasses and forage right up to their processing. In contrast, feed-lot and grain-finished cattle often spend their last days in confined spaces, being fed grains like corn and soy.
Now, there’s taste. Grass-finished beef has a rich, earthy flavor, in our experience. Some say it has a nuttier, more robust taste compared to the milder flavors of grain-fed beef. If you’re looking for a steak with more character, grass-finished might be your choice. (See below for my Grass-Fed Cooking Tips guide.)
In terms of health, grass-finished beef offers more omega-3 fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which are beneficial for heart health and overall well-being. It also tends to have higher levels of vitamins like A and E and is leaner, which can be advantageous if you’re watching your waistline.
Finally, there is the environmental impact. Like many other regenerative ranches we work to improve our soil by rotationally grazing, avoiding pesticides and herbicides. Additionally, our cattle do not receive added hormones or unnecessary antibiotics as is often used in feed-lot finished beef cattle. This approach benefits both the land and the livestock.
So, whether it’s for the taste, health benefits, ethical, or environmental reasons, grass-finished beef is worth trying!
